1979– 1983
Maurice Bishop’s Vision
Prime Minister Maurice Bishop (1979–1983) was a driving force behind the airport project, envisioning direct flights from Europe and North America as essential to boosting Grenada’s tourism and strengthening its economy. Despite Cold War tensions and political challenges, Bishop’s unwavering commitment ensured the project’s progress.
1979
Construction Begins
Construction of the airport commenced under Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, supported by Cuba and other allied nations. This ambitious project represented Grenada’s vision for economic independence and global connectivity, aiming to position the island as a gateway for international travel and trade.
1984
Airport Completion and Opening
The airport was completed in 1984 following U.S. intervention during Operation Urgent Fury. Its opening marked a pivotal moment in Grenada’s aviation history, transforming the facility into a cornerstone for regional connectivity and economic growth.
2009
Name Change
The airport was officially renamed Maurice Bishop International Airport to honor the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and his pivotal role in advancing Grenada’s aviation and economic development.
2020– 2025
Recent Upgrades
Under the China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) Project, significant modernization efforts were completed in 2025 to improve safety, efficiency, and passenger experience. Key upgrades include:
- Runway resurfacing and installation of a solar-powered lighting system for sustainable night operations.
- Expanded apron, upgraded service lanes, and installation of modern loading bridges to accommodate larger aircraft.
- Canopy expansion and bypass road resurfacing for improved traffic flow and passenger comfort.
- Construction of a state-of-the-art Emergency Operations Center, along with procurement of a new Air Traffic Management System and PAPI lights for enhanced navigation and safety.

Monuments & Memorials
Maurice Bishop International Airport is home to two significant monuments that honor lives lost during pivotal moments in Grenada’s history. These landmarks not only pay tribute to those who served but also stand as enduring symbols of the island’s complex past.
Memorial to the Cuban Internationalist Martyrs
This memorial honors the 24 Cuban workers who tragically lost their lives during the 1983 conflict and Operation Urgent Fury. The Mausoleum stands as a symbol of Grenada’s enduring respect and gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
American Monument
Dedicated to the 19 U.S. servicemen who fell during Operation Urgent Fury, this monument reflects the profound impact of the intervention and its role in shaping Grenada’s modern history.
Reflection & Heritage
Together, these monuments invite reflection and understanding, offering visitors a deeper connection to Grenada’s cultural heritage.
Plaques located at each monument provide historical information and commemorate the individuals whose sacrifices are remembered at these sites.
